Sermon on the mount
The Sermon on the Mount is found in the Gospel of Matthew, chapters 5-7.
Matthew 5
- 1-12: "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be
1 filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called2 children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."3 - 13-16: "You are the salt of the earth... You are the light of the world."
- 17-48: "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away,
4 not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of5 heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.6 For I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never7 enter the kingdom of heaven." (Includes teachings on murder, adultery, divorce, oaths, loving enemies)
Matthew 6
- 1-18: "Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them; for then you will have no reward
8 from your Father who is in heaven. Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and9 in the streets, to attract attention to themselves. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may10 be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you."11 (Includes teachings on prayer and fasting) - 25-34: "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more
12 than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds13 them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by worrying can add a single hour to your14 life's span? And why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was15 not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What16 shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For17 the Gentiles strive for all these things; and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things18 will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."19
Matthew 7
- 1-6: "Judge not, that you be not judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.
20 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there21 is a log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your22 brother's eye." - 12: "So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets."
23 - 13-27: "Enter by the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter
24 by it. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and25 there are few who find it. Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves."26 (Includes the parable of the wise and foolish builders)
This is a partial excerpt. The Sermon on the Mount is a significant portion of the Gospel of Matthew and contains many more profound teachings.
