A Little Ambassador of Comfort: Pet Therapists Pete and Zeke

Meet Pete and Zeke

Pete, a retired social worker, has spent his life helping others—and now, he continues that mission alongside his adorable therapy dog, Zeke. Zeke is a pure-bred Shih Tzu born and raised in Henderson County. Small but not tiny, Zeke is the perfect lapdog and has become a little ambassador of comfort and cheer. With his friendly personality and calm demeanor, Zeke passed his therapy tests with flying colors.

Pete's experience in social work and familiarity with hospice care inspired him to explore pet therapy. "I thought Zeke would be perfect for the role," Pete shares. "His natural temperament is calming, and he loves people." After completing training, Pete and Zeke began visiting a local family a few times a week—a setting that feels just right for them both.

Pete believes dogs are honest, and that honesty is part of what makes Zeke so special. His gentle nature and approachable size make him easy to pet, which brings comfort to patients and families alike. "He's small enough to sit on a lap but big enough to feel substantial," Pete explains. Zeke's visits to Elizabeth House have created countless moments of joy. His size and temperament make him ideal for patients who want the soothing presence of a dog without feeling overwhelmed. "He's perfect for so many people," Pete says.

The Power of Pet Therapy

Pet therapy offers calm and companionship during life's most difficult moments. Pete has seen firsthand how Zeke's presence brings smiles and eases stress. "It's a win-win situation," Pete reflects. "I get to keep helping people, and Zeke gets to share his gift." For Pete, volunteering with Zeke is deeply rewarding. "I feel lucky in my life," he says. "And sharing Zeke's skills with those who need him makes it even better."

Why Pet Therapy Matters

Pete believes pet therapy is invaluable in hospice and palliative care. "It's about connection," he explains. "Zeke helps people feel comforted and cared for in ways words can't always express."  If you're thinking about becoming a pet volunteer, Pete says, "You'll know if your dog has the temperament for therapy work. Start by helping them feel comfortable around wheelchairs and hospital beds. Zeke and I are a team—and it's one of the best decisions I've ever made."
