Stop before crosswalk then go to turn right
Even if the crosswalk is completely empty, you must still come to a full and complete stop before the crosswalk (or the painted stop line) first. Driving directly through the crosswalk to wait at the corner without stopping beforehand is illegal.
The Correct Procedure for a Right Turn on Red:
- The Initial Stop: Stop your vehicle completely before entering the crosswalk or reaching the painted stop line. Treat it just like a stop sign.
- The Visual Check: Look for pedestrians approaching the crosswalk from either side, and check for oncoming traffic.
- The "Inch Forward" (Creep): Once you have made that complete initial stop and verified the crosswalk is clear, you can then cautiously roll or inch forward into the 20-foot space toward the corner to get a better view of cross-traffic.
- The Turn: Proceed with your right turn only when it is entirely safe and clear.
In short, you can use that space between the crosswalk and the corner to check traffic, but only after you have made a full stop behind the crosswalk lines first.
Are there any specific signs at this intersection, such as "No Turn on Red" or a red arrow signal instead of a solid red light?
