Suddenly Single - Myrtle Beach Memories
Ironically in this Ramble I barely mentioned Myrtle Beach. Myrtle Beach Memories just rolled off the tongue better.
It’s all about our week in Edisto. Those were wonderful days and wonderful memories. We didn’t let take the kids for one day on the rides at Myrtle Beach every year/
00:00:01 all right I'm going to try to start this my dog is already whimpering so but I was just doing jumping jacks on the trampoline and listening to or watching um the video the sultants of Swing the Dire Straits and you know suddenly memories started flooding in and so I thought well maybe I should talk to talk to the camera about it it's daytime and uh so that's different and I'm not going to blur my face necessarily we'll see Zeke but if I get disrupted again that'll happen the point I'm making is wow these memories come
00:00:39 and go whenever they want to or whatever triggers them and I've heard that word before triggered and um you know I get a better understanding for a lot of things as I go along because of more experiences but um the what I'm talking about today is uh back in 1986 six and I know that because because we got our first new car together which was a Honda Accord a 1986 Honda Accord and boy we thought we'd died and gone to heaven I mean here it was uh just a brand new car that we were just uh I don't know just
00:01:19 head over heels excited about it and uh so on top of that we also took a vacation to Edisto Island and both of us were working two jobs I was working at Sears and that's why we were able to do this Tess was always work in the hospital and nursing homes but you know because Sears paid for a two week or a one week vacation whatever it was that kind of gave us that opportunity and my sister would always come down and meet us and so suddenly we're having a a vacation and a family reunion and it was
00:01:52 just a great thing and we did that for a few years and it was wonderful and so my point is that not only did we get the Honda Accord we also it had a CD player and so we for the first time bought CDs and the first album we bought was Dire Straits and I forget the name it was a blue album with a guitar on the front and uh I believe it was Brothers in Arms I'm not sure but it was uh oh my gosh not walk this way but anyway it was I Want My MTV that was kind of the hit song so here I am whatever it is 46 years later
00:02:32 um jumping on my trampoline listening to the dire to Dire Straits but the U sus of swing and what I remember of that is I remember John maren telling us about that song and you know that was kind of that was a big hit at that time as well uh whether it was Top 40 stuff or I don't really know point is now I'm fully in love with that song I'm fully in love with Mark noler playing it just an incredible musician an incredible band and incredible energy on stage and that's why I jump to it it's a 1015 or
00:03:05 101 minute song and I you know can jump through all of it but now I jumped off to talk to you and we're already 3 minutes into it so what is this all about well it's memories of test because in those days we traveled down to Edisto Island and we stayed in a place for a week that we rented actually from my supervisor and uh like I said it was like a family reunion and we did it a few years in a row and one or two years uh John um you know Eric's friend came and stayed with us and that was great for them and I don't remember if Lauren
00:03:47 had her own friends coming April or whoever maybe but you know probably we shouldn't be naming names but my point being that it was something that I felt kind of privileged honored to do that you know to be able to take the family somewhere and then have them bring their friends with there something I kind of just never did when I was a kid growing up it was pretty much whatever we did we did as a family and that was it nothing wrong with that but I mean this was a different generation a different way of looking at
00:04:21 things and the thing is when we were driving down we would play that album brothers and arms over and over and over again every song kind of became oh yeah that song you know you'd anticipate it you'd sing along with it you'd do it you know I Want My MTV I can hear it in the back of my mind I don't want to have to you know ruin it for you but the point is those were memories and they were great at the time I mean you know it wasn't like I was in Oblivion that I wasn't aware that these were great times I was and thank
00:04:56 goodness for that but you know everything has its pressures and so forth but you know we were able to go and spend that week and go to the beach and it was at ediso island so from there we would kind of jump the springboard to uh we'd go to Myrtle Beach for the park rides for the kids one day we'd go to Charleston to uh you know to see Charleston and walk around in Charleston the most beautiful city in the world and then we would go to um kiaa Island kiawa was basically like this the tropics for
00:05:28 me that was like going to M or something and nothing have been but the point is we we go to kiaa and walk these beautiful beautiful pristine beaches and one time I was carrying Lauren on my shoulders waiting out into the waves and I don't know if it was coincidence or if it was Hispanic day or what but next thing you know there was a whole bunch of Mexican people and on Horseback coming either towards us or away from us whatever yelling on on yelling get out of the water and so I didn't know what they were talking about
00:06:05 and I and I was out there standing out there pointing at there was a th going across the waves and I thought it was a dolphin and I was like hey Lauren look at the dolphin and it wasn't you know it wasn't doing its swooping thing it was just cutting across well it hit me in third it hit me like oh my God that's why they're yelling get out of the water it's a damn shark there's a shark in the water and it was within you know a few yards well onay I you know I turned around and didn't didn't swim I just
00:06:40 walked out because I had Lauren on my shoulders and she was I don't know if she was five or six she was you know getting up there a little bit and anyway but that's the story I tell you know over the years and you know I don't even remember Tess being there in the water with us I don't think she was she was was a sunbather she had this beautiful yellow bikini that she wore that was just you know that was I still have that burned in my memory and uh you know to me she was adorable and you know suntanned and everything I basically
00:07:14 never thought about suntanning or sunbathing kind of hated it kind of bored with it but um I did like swimming in the ocean and I did like taking Lauren and Eric out and we used to play these games in the water because Linda was there too with her daughter and that's Lauren's cousin and so like I said it was a family reunion and I'm telling you we did this I swear to God maybe $10 a day who knows we didn't have enough money to go out for dinner we would buy a pound or two of shrimp there was always these
00:07:47 roadside stands that were selling fresh tomatoes and shrimp and so we would do that and we'd make dinner we'd make boiled shrimp and that was fantastic and then I remember one time we stopped we got a keyme pie that was huge a keyme pie I can literally taste it as I sit here and so you know these are the things you do as young people coming up and even you know Ironically in those days I used to be fascinated with the sound of the ocean waves I used to have that sense of oh my gosh the I don't know this peace and serenity the
00:08:21 permanence of it and the the steadfastness of it the fact that you could come back and there it was again it was a just a wonderful thing and I love the sound of the Waves crashing and I believe there may or may not have been a tape of the ocean waves but I know in my mind that would be something that would be good to do or good to have and I don't know if I ever made tapes back in those days because we didn't have iPhones or anything and whatever like little box camera I have those are the pictures we have now but
00:08:52 my point is that now if I ever go back to the beach with my whole new thing with YouTube and creating videos and doing the uh waterfalls and everything yeah I'll definitely park by the ocean and record the ocean waves so I'm going to hit the road it's going on 9 minutes but I got this I don't know this wave came over me this wave of nostalgia it's a wonderful feeling it feels great and it feels a great source of energy to even talk about it so I'm glad I did and thanks for listening and whatever
00:09:24 memories you have hold on cherish them love them Love the One You're With one of my all-time great songs Stephen Stills Love the One You're With we'll do it baby all right talk to you soon byebye thanks for listening
