Welcome to My Neighborhood - Alice

Good morning, Peter. Hope you're having a good morning so far. Eliza and I got up early and had one walk and now we're starting our second walk. We're heading down St. Paul's Place. And we're going to go to her favorite fountain. When I get there, I have to always pick her up so she can look at the water. And she's so cute. She knows the whole routine, which is her middle name. Eliza Routine McCracken Hurst. She loves her routine. So my neighborhood has 2,000 houses. And... a clubhouse, swimming pools, tennis and racquetball courts. It's all ages. It's not a 55 plus. And different areas have townhouses, different areas have homes seven and a half feet apart like my area or with larger yards and then there's an area called the estate which I have not been there yet I keep meaning to drive through it one day and I haven't um And we have a little quote downtown area, which has maybe seven small buildings. It really looks a lot like Demarest did in 1971. And there's Bedford Food and Drink there where they have live music. And then we have a nail salon, which I go to, a workout fitness center, a real estate. We're getting a needlework shop. And then we have a green area. that has open space for the different events during the year around holidays, music. So that's really nice. So there's always something to get involved with activities at the clubhouse, wine club, beer club, you know, game day, um, public speaking. just Tai Chi, yoga, you know, a lot of different activities. And we have a really pretty clock tower. My neighborhood's called Bedford, and yes, it is supposed to be patterned after the movie It's a Wonderful Life. So a lot of the street names reflect that movie, which is interesting. And I guess my favorite part about it is being an extrovert. I'm interested in talking with people, seeing people, and I rarely walk out of my front door without seeing someone I know or meeting someone new. The other thing I really like is there are four houses on the alley. Actually, all the homes have alleys, so all the parking is behind the house. And every house in Bedford has a front porch. I don't know about the estate. It may not. But in the, you know, the part of Bedford I live in, the main part, the estate's just one area. and i love that because eliza and i spend a lot of time out of there because she's an extrovert too and she has fomo peter which is hard for me to keep up with i think you're going to be able to hear the water at the waterfalls and i'm going to pick her up And let her look. Oh my goodness, Peter. She's as happy today as she was the first time I ever brought her here. She's just so interested in it. And she doesn't understand it. But she does love it. So yes, the front porches are fabulous. And that was done intentionally. And It just really makes more of a community, obviously. So that's really nice. And that's one of my favorite parts. About three miles from my house. There's another area that has a wine store, three restaurants, a workout center. It's not part of Bedford, but it's near my neighborhood. You can walk there easily. So the interesting part. is that when I started working with my realtor here it'll be four years ago in June he sent me to look at Bedford and I said nah that's not really what I'm looking for and so I kept looking and then one day I was looking at another neighborhood but no no Eliza but at the bottom of the listing, here was my house coming soon in Bedford. And I loved the way it looked on the outside. It's a craftsman And so I thought, well, I'll go look at that. And my realtor always likes to remind me that every other house she showed me, I looked for problems, like looking under the sink, or there are leaks, or, you know, asking all these questions. She said, we walked in your house, and you might have asked two questions the whole time. So that was interesting. And I did learn, I looked at another home in Bedford, that was not positioned for the east and west, the sunrise and sunset, the way mine is. And I immediately wasn't interested in it because of that. So that was something interesting I learned about myself. And then If I haven't told you this, I might have, but at the closing, I asked to talk with the owners that had just sold me their house. And in North Carolina, you know this probably from when you all bought your house, the buyers and the sellers are in different rooms. So anyway, I met them. And it ends up the wife's first cousin was Dave and Rich's attorney. He's now a judge in Spartanburg. And, um, I knew his wife and Asher and Daniel knew his two daughters. So that was such a sigh of relief for me because for some reason I didn't invite Daniel to come look at the house with me. I guess because I usually went on weekdays, he was working. And that was during COVID when, you know, it was a seller's market. So you needed to hop on them. But once I learned that, I thought, gosh, I guess this was the house that I was meant to live in. And I couldn't be happier with it. I still miss Palmetto Street. I always will. But it just wasn't working for me anymore. So... Eliza and I are going to continue our walk and I'll send this to you and talk to you later. Bye-bye.

  1. When I listened to this yesterday, I had visions of selling my home and moving there immediately ( even though I don’t know where ‘there’ is, except the neighborhood’s name is Bedford)…it may as well be named Mayberry, with Opie and Andy Griffith waving hello in the distance! The description of an ideal place with waterfalls and neighborly front porches made me wonder how much was real or how much was your warm and kind spirit coaxing the absolute best out of your surroundings. If I had a puppy, I’d be walking beside you, sharing in the magic and glow of a perfect day! Thanks for the precious images!
